SBC Covid19 Summer Cycling Challenge
June 15, 2020 - July 27, 2020

ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

Welcome to the Springfield Bicycle Club’s COVID-19 Summer Cycling Challenge (SBC-CSCC). There is no question, we are in an unprecedented time. The Springfield Bicycle Club has paused led-group rides until at least June 26 when Illinois is scheduled to move into Phase 4 (Revitalization). However, we still encourage everyone to get some exercise by riding with social distancing as a priority. As much as we love seeing our SBC family, we simply cannot execute large group rides in a safe manner right now the way you would expect from our organization.

But we believe the spirit of riding is more than a few Sundays each summer. So, we want to call on you, our riders, to help keep that feeling alive this year!  That is why we are offering the SBC-CSCC (COVID-19 Summer Cycling Challenge) for 2020.

This year the Club was going to begin charging (very) minimally for the Challenge Rides, as they were to become more supported rides. The fee was to aid in paying for support and for the medals distributed at the SBC January banquet. However, there will be no charges for participating in these CSCC rides. There also will be no medals in January. We just want to encourage everyone to get on their bikes and ride.

THE RULES

There will be three routes in the series, each with three varying distances, spaced over nine weeks. Every rider who wants in on the fun can track their mileage and submit it by the deadline. Routes will be announced by 8:00 a.m. Things kick off on June 15!

Route 1

Date Announced:  June 15

Deadline for Submission:  July 6

Route 2

Date Announced: July 6

Deadline for Submission:  July 26

Route 3

Date Announced:  July 27

Deadline for Submission:  July 16

You can cycle the CSCC rides on your own time. Ride with friends and family (safely social distancing, of course) or on your own, just as long as you are riding and having Cycling Challenge fun along the way!

How to Submit a Route: Complete the CSCC by simply taking a photo or screenshot at the end of your ride of your preferred tracking system (Strava, MapMyRide, Ride With GPS, etc.) and uploading your image to the specific event on the Club’s Facebook Page or emailing your mileage to the Club’s Record’s Keeper at records@spfldcycling.org. Information must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the deadline noted above.

How to Submit a Photo: In addition to getting out on your bike, help us fill our Facebook page with photos you have taken along the way on the CSCC. We want to see photos of those who are out riding (safely and distanced, please!) on the rides. Submit your photos on each week’s Facebook event page or email them to photos@spfldcycling.org

Awards:  One random participant will be drawn from each mileage distance who submits their rides either on Facebook or via email, and each will be awarded a $25 gift certificate to a local bicycle shop. Winners will be announced at the SBC Summer Picnic on Saturday, August 15 (if the pandemic allows).

Who Can Participate: The CSCC is open to Club members and non-members alike. Only Club members are eligible for the bicycle shop gift certificates. Non-Club members will be entered to win an individual SBC membership. If your membership is not current, to renew you can go to https://www.spfldcycling.org/content.aspx?page_id=9&club_id=300348 or encourage others to sign up. If you have questions about your membership status please contact Ted Sunder at secretary@spfldcycling.org. He is ready to check your membership status, guide you in obtaining membership, or assist with renewal.

Here are some COVID-19 riding guidance for individuals:

  • Illinois is currently in Phase 3 (Recovery), so ride solo or in a group of no more than 10 people.
  • Bring a face covering and hand sanitizer on every ride.
  • Wear a face covering when it is not possible to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
  • Be particularly mindful of social distancing when passing others and when being passed.
  • Avoid crowded trails and choose an alternate route if a trail becomes unexpectedly crowded.
  • Remember that you represent all cyclists on every ride! Obey the law and adhere to public health guidelines.
  • Avoid group riding for at least 14 days if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, if you are sick, or if you have traveled to a high-risk area.
  • All riders should be symptom free for 14 days. Symptoms include fever, chill, fatigue, cough, upper respiratory infection symptoms, body aches, loss of smell or taste. If you have a fever, STAY HOME!
  • Stay at home if you begin to feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and slight runny nose, until you recover.
  • If you have labored breathing or a cough when you take a deep breath, please stay home.
  • Every participant should bring necessary supplies, tools (tubes, CO2/bike pump, tire levers, etc), and food to support themselves.

These routes were designed early in 2020. Road conditions on these routes have not been confirmed. You may encounter recently chipped and sealed roads or roads that have been closed due to construction. Because of this we are allowing you a three-week window to complete the ride. Also, keep in mind that these rides are not supported by the SBC along the way. Most routes go by convenience or grocery stores (or maybe even vending machines) in smaller towns. Take advantage of what they have to offer. Understand that restrooms may be closed at these locations. Come prepared with everything you need to support yourself for whatever distance you choose.

The Springfield Bicycle Club is not responsible for any illness, injuries or death to any rider or damage to their bicycle for any reason. Ride at your own risk. Cycling carries a significant risk of personal injury or death. DO NOT participate in riding a bike or any rides unless you are knowledgeable about the risks involved and are willing to assume personal responsibility for all risks associated with these activities. Please observe all applicable traffic laws, wear a helmet, and conduct yourself in a safe and prudent manner while participating.
