President's Message

What a whirlwind cycling has been for me over the past few months have been! It is hard to believe that a little over a month ago the Capital City Century was just in the rearview mirror. Thanks to the riders, volunteers, and sponsors who made that event a success. The weather was warm, but no rain! We've already began looking to the CCC for 2022. Next year will be the 50th anniversary for the annual ride. Let us know if you have a creative idea for 2022.

Last weekend I participated, for the first time, in the Hilly Hundred in Elletsville, Indiana. This two-day event had a 50-mile ride on Saturday and a 50-mile ride on Sunday. Each ride had 3,000 feet in climbing. Even Petersburg doesn't have hills like those. One topped at 26%! Several from the Club rode together and it was great seeing others from the Springfield area. Check out my Facebook or Instagram for photo galleries.

Club members have been traveling to other organized rides including road-riding the Apple Cider Century in Michigan and gravel-racking the Ill Kanza VI. We're hoping the final weekend in October is good weather. We'd love to have you join on a local fall ride and cookout on Saturday, October 30 from Centennial Park. Details are in this e-newsletter. Be sure to RSVP through the calendar feature on our website.

Wave to me if we meet on the road or trail.

Election Time

Your Springfield Bicycle Club Board consists of 15 annually elected positions. We are currently seeking some board of director positions for the 2022 calendar year. If you would like to find out more about leadership in your Club please email Troy at president@spfldcycling.org or call 217-720-1568.

Once the list of candidates is solidified, the slate of officers will be presented to the Membership. This year's annual membership meeting will be held via Zoom on Monday, November 8 at 7:00pm. The Zoom link can be provided for those members who wish to join. Voting for the 2022 Board will take place through Club Express. More details to come as we move into November.

Saturday, October 30, 8 -10 AM

Let's round out the 2021 riding season with one last big group ride!  The ride starts at Centennial Park with options for 20-, 40- and 62-mile rides. Aid stations in Pleasant Plains and Petersburg are planned, and the club will be serving up burgers and dogs in the park afterwards.
Learn more about the ride and please RSVP at the link below, as we'll need a head count for lunch.

The Springfield Park District is bringing the first ever cyclocross event to Centennial Park this coming Saturday. Sign up for categories ranging from beginner to experienced, or just bring your cowbell and spectate!  Learn more at the event's Facebook page.

Volunteers Needed
The Springfield Park District is looking for a few volunteers to be course marshals where the race crosses paths and roadways. Please contact Marty Strieker at mstrieker@springfieldparks.org. Volunteers are needed from 9 AM to 3 PM but could break shifts to suit your needs.

Practice on the Course
If you're on the fence about signing up, here's your chance to pre-ride the course! We won't have any obstacles set up but there are plenty of spots to practice your flying dismount (or just stop and get off the bike). Meet at Centennial Park in the large parking lot at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, October 19 and have fun riding laps. Mountain, cx, gravel or hybrid bike with knobby tires recommended. Lights recommended.

Incentive Awards - September 2021

We're pleased to announce the following winners for the month of September. Congratulations!

Marty Celnick’s ride to the Apple Barn on September 19th, was voted Ride of the Month.  On a hot mid September day, Marty led the group from Rotary Park down the Wabash and Interurban Trails to Chatham and continued south on Main Street to Covered Bridge Rd, then left on the Old Indian Trail back into Chatham.  It was the first ride to the Apple Barn in more than two years.  The ride went without a hitch, save for a slight train delay on Polecat Creek Rd.

Ted Sunder won the Ride Leader Incentive Award for leading those Wednesday evening rides on the Sangamon Valley Trail.  Ted will receive a $50 gift certificate to his favorite bike shop.

The Almost Anything Award went to the riders and volunteers for the Capital City Century.  Over 300 riders turned out and they rode distances ranging from 23 to 126 miles.  There were also many volunteers  who worked at the rest stops, provided food, and drove sag vehicles.  Thank you to all who have made the event a success.

SBC Members - Did you join a ride that stands out as memorable? Maybe something crazy happened and you want to tell the story! Do you know a club member who has gone above and beyond? We would love to get your input for Ride of the Month and Almost Anything Awards.
