President's Message

Happy New Year! As with most Januaries, I sure am looking forward to what the year has in store. Of course, I'd rather be outside on the bike rather than forced to ride inside, but it would seem that 2022 could be one filled with hope and a good future. As you can see by the list below, there are lots of things the Club has in store. Thanks to everyone who confirmed the 2022 Board. I would appreciate it if you'd consider helping for one (or more) of our many cycling and non-cycling events this year. Let me know if you see something that interests you. There is always an open line of communication through any of our social media channels or by emailing president@spfldcycling.org.

2021 Recap and a Preliminary Look at 2022

There's no doubt that 2021 was a big year for the SBC. Noteworthy events included:

  • Memorial Commemorating Bill Donels - Fundraising efforts enabled the installation of a bench and bike rack honoring Bill Donels, a former Board member who passed away in 2020. Bill was a tireless advocate for cycling and a key player in the process of developing and building multi-use trails in Springfield.
  • Sangamon Cycling Series - The SCS kicked off in May with the first of four cycling events. Over the summer, friendships were forged and little groups of riders formed and rode together at the Capital City Century. A social at Home Plate Bar & Grill celebrated the end of the series.
  • Capital City Century - The CCC returned for its 49th year with a new venue at Centennial Park. This year, the routes headed west and took riders through small towns. Planning for the 50th CCC has already begun. Stay tuned for announcements.
  • SBC-branded clothing - T-shirts with the logo were a popular item in 2021.  And we now have socks! The Pactimo store offered several new kit colors to choose from.
  • Fall Ride and Cookout - A final ride of the year was held on October 30th. The weather proved to be a challenge with cold and high winds, but everyone warmed up afterwards at a cookout at Centennial Park.
  • 501(3)(c) - The process to obtain designation as a nonprofit organization has begun and will be finalized in 2022. This is a very important step in obtaining sponsors for events like the Capital City Century, as well as obtaining grants when applicable.
  • Yoga for Cyclists - If you have been to Biketek in Springfield, you've probably met Nancy Thompson. In addition to running a busy shop, Nancy is a certified yoga instructor and teaches at Flow Yoga. In December, Nancy organized and taught a yoga class tailored to cyclists. Watch for an announcement about more opportunities to practice yoga with Nancy in 2022.
