INFORMATION FOR LEADERS

Do you have interest in helping serve as a Ride Leader for this program? The requirements are simple and rewarding, and you can make a difference in introducing participants to the fun of group riding.  We ask that Ride Leaders participate in the Selection Rides and help their group find a club ride that matches ability/speed/comfort level. Ride Leaders are encouraged to ride with their group at the Sangamon Cycling Series and the Capital City Century.

Ride Leaders who complete the program receive free entry into the Sangamon Cycling Series and the Capital City Century. We are developing a Ride Leader jersey that the SBC will subsidize.

We hope to have more than one Ride Leader for the different pace groups, and friendly competition is both supported and encouraged.

TIME COMMITMENT FOR RIDE LEADERS

SELECTION RIDE
1X a month - May, June, July and August (dates tba, with first date potentially May 4)

Goal of the selection ride is to help participants determine their appropriate pace group and be assigned a leader.

How it works: Ride Leaders and participants will meet at a location to be announced. Potential locations include the Illinois State Fairgrounds or Lincoln Park. They will ride laps of a short, looped course for approximately 45 minutes. The goal is to find a pace for each participants that he/she can sustain easily and match that individual with a corresponding group.

Ride Leaders and participants will start at the same time. Everyone will start at the same pace and gradually ramp up.  Example:
  • All riders set off at 11mph
  • 3-5min later, A-slow C leaders accelerate to 13mph, D-EZ riders remain
  • 3-5min later, A-C leaders accelerate to 15mph, slow C remain at 13
  • 3-5min later, A-B leaders accelerate to 17mph, C riders remain at 15
  • 3-5min later, A leaders accelerate to 19mph, B riders remain at 17

This should help participants self-sort and little groups will naturally form. Participants are informed of their pace and who their Ride Leader will be.

Ideally we will have more than one ride leader for the various groups.

Capital City Connection (CaCiCo)

The SBC is launching a new program in 2024 which focuses on engaging with riders who are unfamiliar with group rides. The Capital City Connection (CaCiCo) will kick off in late April or early May. There will be several events throughout the year to help riders find groups that match their fitness and skill levels, as well as educate and empower these riders to engage in more activities.

Is the CaCiCo For Me?
Whether you're a rider who just hasn't found a group that matches your pace, someone who has always been a solo rider or wasn't aware of group riding, or someone who just wants to get more into cycling in general, we're here to help make that connection for you. This no-cost program will be open to both SBC members and the general public. We look forward to helping grow and engage our community with this new program and hope you can join us!

As part of this program, there will be weekly rides at every level (D, Slow C, C, B, A) for CaCiCo participants to stay engaged with the social aspect of cycling to to keep active.

How Does the Program Work?
Starting in early May (date TBD), a "selection ride" will be held where interested participants will ride with a group. There will be volunteers from the Springfield Bicycle Club who will serve as Team Leaders and will help you find a group that matches your ability. Team leaders will then hold group rides each week. There will also be educational sessions related to cycling.
